These buns went viral on TikTok… And for good reason!

These buns are not your grocery store bun! They are so good they will make you question your life choices thus far. And the best part, they’re SO easy to make!

These buns are soft, squishy, and as delicious as they look! They will elevate any dish that requires a bun including but not limited to: hamburgers, cheese burgers, sloppy joes, pulled pork sandwiches, chicken sandwiches, chicken salad sandwiches, egg salad sandwiches, and SO much more!!

I don’t mean to sound dramatic, but these buns are life changing. Once you have them you’ll never go back to any other bun. Proceed with caution!

The only hamburger buns you'll ever want again

Ingredients

2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast (1 packet)

1 cup warm water

3 tbsp sugar (any sugar will work, including honey)

3 tbsp butter (softened or melted is fine)

1 1/2 tsp salt

3 cups flour

1 egg + another for egg wash

Optional: sesame seeds or other toppings of your choice

Directions

  1. Bloom the yeast: add warm water, active dry yeast, and sugar in a large mixing bowl or your stand mixer bowl. Stir until the sugar dissolves. Cover with a clean tea towel and allow to sit for ~10 minutes. The mixture should look a little foamy or you should see the yeast moving to the top of the water. That is how you know it is active and ready to use!
  2. Add butter, salt, and 1 egg to mixture: Mix the ingredients together
  3. Add the flour 1/2 cup at a time: Using a stand mixer is the easiest way to do this but you absolutely can do this by hand! Add enough flour that the dough comes together and starts cleaning the sides of your bowl. This dough shouldn’t be overly sticky.
  4. Knead… a lot: You’re going to want to knead this until it passes the window pane test. This will take 5-15 minutes in a stand mixer depending what mixer you have. If you do it by hand it could take double that time. Don’t fret over a perfect window pane test. The buns should be okay if you have spent at least some time kneading.
  5. Let the dough do a first rise: Shape the dough into a ball and place in a lightly greased bowl – or if you’re like me, just put it back into the bowl you used to make it! It isn’t that serious and we don’t have time for a ton of dishes. This rise will take ~1-2 hours depending how warm your kitchen is. You want the dough to at least double in size.
  6. Shape into buns: After the first rise is complete, turn dough out onto the counter and cut it into 8 equal pieces. Shape those 8 pieces into individual balls and place them on a parchment paper lined baking sheet. Press down on the balls to finish shaping them into hamburger buns.
  7. Let the dough do it’s second and final rise: Cover the buns with a clean tea towel and let them rise for another 30-45 minutes. The buns will puff up during this time. Preheat oven to 375F during this time.
  8. Egg wash and add toppings: After the final rise and your buns are looking puffy, crack an egg into a bowl and give it a good whisk. Lightly brush the whisked egg on top of each bun. Add toppings, such as sesame seeds, while egg is wet. You can also use milk instead of an egg if you desire or skip this step completely, the buns just won’t be as pretty.
  9. Bake at 375F for 15-20 minutes: Every oven is different so be sure to keep an eye on the buns. You do not want them to over bake.
  10. ENJOY!!

I hope you try these and love them as much as we do! These are made almost weekly at our house and never last long!
